With Labor Day weekend quickly approaching, TripAdvisor was curious to learn whether travelers would be hitting the highways or taking to the skies for one last summer hurrah. According to TripAdvisor’s annual fall and Labor Day travel survey of more than 2,000 U.S. respondents, 28 percent of Americans are planning to travel over Labor Day weekend this year, down slightly from 30 percent one year ago.

Of those traveling, 36 percent of travelers are going up, up, and away by flying to their destinations this year, an increase from 33 percent in 2009. Sixty-six percent plan to hop in the car over Labor Day weekend, down from 70 percent in 2009.

According to TripAdvisor’s survey, Friday, September 3, marks the busiest travel departure day of the weekend, with 35 percent planning to getaway on that date. In an effort to maximize their time off, the majority of travelers – 39 percent – plan to travel home on Monday, September 6.

Shining a spotlight on travelers’ top ten favorite Labor Day destinations in America, TripAdvisor recently polled more than 5,000 members and uncovered an interesting list of U.S. cities and beach destinations that are perfect for a long weekend getaway.

Labor day is one of my favorite holidays – the time of year just CAN’T be beat! Check out our labor day trip to California (your #4 destination!) if you get a chance – we were a little further north in the wine-country region – and documented some beautiful outdoor dining locations in a recent post. Keep up the great work Trip Advisor!
