We received the following question from Twitter user, @wouterblok. The answer is simple:
Q: @wouterblok – @TripAdvisor as a vast majority of the traffic is organic, how will the non index for Google affect SEO positions? #asksteve
A: If you noindex your content, your pages do not appear at all in Google.

I am not on twitter. Can some ask Steve, why is TripAdvisor not looking out for their customers best interest by blocking these reviews form Google to get maximum exposure? TripAdvisors customers are the hotels that pay them money yearly to be listed on TripAdvisor for exposure in order to get business. TripAvisors tactic of blocking reviews from Google will be big a consideration of where we recommend customers go to write a review. Additionally, keeping the TripAdvisor Badge on our websites and writing the yearly check to TripAdvisor.
Thanks
Kevin,
We don’t think showing a snipit of a review on Google Places is good for hoteliers. What if it’s a bad review, for instance? The management response that you would have written would not be shown. Plain and simple, it’s not in the hoteliers’ best interest and does not offer a complete perspective on the property. On TripAdvisor, it’s a more informative experience for the consumer.

Dear Steve
So would that be a sure-fire way of avoiding having reviews summarized on Google Places?
Phil
Steve, first timer here so pardon if this is the wrong topic for this blog (missed where/how one starts a new one) but my luck with trip planning has suddenly gone the way of my stock picks! I just bought airline tickets to Cairo last Friday for travel (12 days) in August … we then proceed on to Kenya but then return to JFK via Cairo. I know you’re not a prophet but should we rethink this trip, cancel the leg to Egypt and just do Kenya or do you think we should hang in there? So far we’ve only paid for the airfare, the rest is due soon. Thanks! Peter
Hi Peter,
Thanks for your comment. We recommend relying on the U.S. State Department for the most up-to-date information on the situation in Egypt, including evacuation instructions. You can find the site here: travel.state.gov.
